Leadership

Taking a business risk with clear accountability

Taking a risk is part of building. Accountability means being clear about what you are committing to and how you will judge the next step.

Describe the opportunity in concrete terms.

An exciting idea becomes more useful when it can be described as a business decision. What are you trying to build? Who is it intended to help? What would need to be true for it to work?

My entrepreneurial path has crossed different industries, including a treatment center built from the ground up. The willingness to begin matters, and so does the responsibility that follows the decision.

Separate the ambition from the first commitment.

A long-term ambition can be large while the next commitment is specific. Define the work, the resources involved, and the people responsible for making it happen. Identify the assumptions that need to be tested rather than treating them as settled facts.

For an illustrative technology project, the first commitment might be a defined pilot with a limited task. Its purpose is to learn something useful before deciding whether to expand. The size of that commitment should reflect the business’s actual circumstances.

Create a point for reconsideration.

Decide what you will review and when. Ask what progress would justify continuing, what would require a change, and what would cause you to pause. A decision point helps a team distinguish conviction from simply continuing by default.

Give people permission to surface evidence that challenges the plan. Leadership includes hearing that information and taking responsibility for the next decision. A business is built through a sequence of those decisions, not only the first act of taking a chance.

TAKE IT INTO THE BUSINESS

A practical check.

  • State the opportunity and its assumptions.
  • Define the first commitment.
  • Assign responsibility for the work.
  • Set a review point and decision criteria.
